Math Manipulatives: More Than Just A Counting Tool

This one’s for you, preschool and early elementary grade teachers! I’m sure most of you have some sort of math manipulative or counting manipulative in your classroom. Manipulatives are a great way to teach math concepts to younger students– they provide a hands-on experience as students learn. As I’ve mentioned before, the more senses that can be engaged during learning, the better chance you have that the concept will become long-term knowledge. I also love manipulatives because they support fine motor development as their tiny fingers pick up and move pieces around. If you have cubes or another more 3D counter, you might also have them use tongs to pick up the counters and move them, thus encouraging even more fine motor skills to be used.

There are so many ways to use manipulatives in your teaching, beyond simply counting with them. Keep reading to discover some fun ways to incorporate these awesome tools into your teaching!

Color sorting

Sorting is one of the earliest and most basic math skills kids learn. Students can work individually or together to sort counters by color. You can have them sort into piles, provide them with colored paper to put them on, or even provide them with colored cups (or color labeled cups) to put them in. 

Grouping by 5s, 10s, etc.

This one might be best for kindergarten or first grade, as that is when they begin to learn to skip count and group numbers. Have students group their counters into groups of 5, 10, 20, or so on. They can do this by color or just by number groups.

Letter Formation

While this isn’t a math skill, you can still use counters for it. Have students practice forming letters with the counters. They might also enjoy spelling their names, or even practicing their spelling words.

Shape Formation

Preschoolers love shapes! Have them use manipulatives to create various shapes. You might need to start with an outline of a shape on a piece of paper for them to follow/trace, but as they become more confident with their shapes, they can do it on their own.

Math Equations

Using manipulatives to display and solve equations can help visual learners see what the math looks like rather than just looking at numbers on a paper. They can create equations for their peers to solve, too, which creates a great opportunity for team work and cooperative thinking.

Pattern Creation

Patterns are all around us, and are another of the foundational math skills that are taught. Students can use counters to follow a pattern or create their own patterns. They can even start a pattern, then share with a classmate to finish it.

Hiding Game

Keeping in mind the abilities of your students, hide counters around the room. Have students go on a “treasure hunt” to find the counters. You can assign them each a color, give them a certain number of counters to find (each student can find 10, etc.), or even put them into pairs to go hunting together. Kids love these kinds of games– they are moving around getting wiggles out, actively searching for something, and if in teams, working together to find the items. 

While these activities are mostly geared toward younger grades, I don’t think students in older grades would mind if you had them try these out. Kids of all ages love to play while they learn!

Storms Have You Stuck Inside?

Within the last week, severe winter storms have hit several cities across the United States, causing many schools to close due to cold temperatures, ice, and/or snow. If schools are closed, that means kids are home– and that can sometimes leave parents or caretakers scrambling to come up with activities for their kids to do. 

If you have found yourself in this situation before, you know that it can be a bit stressful. Below are a few fun, engaging activities you can do for free (or almost free), and with very minimal prep time. These activities can be adapted for any age and ability.

  • Save the Animals! (or Legos, marbles, tiny action figures, etc.)
    Place small animals (or any object of your choice) in a muffin tin. Fill each compartment with water. Let it freeze. Once it is frozen, you can put the giant ice cube in a bowl or shallow tray, then give your child a medicine dropper or syringe and a cup of warm-ish water. Using the dropper, they can squirt water at the ice until it is melted enough to save the object inside.
  • Don’t Touch the Carpet!
    This game is similar to Floor is Lava, but won’t require your kids to jump all over your furniture. Assign a starting point and an end destination. Give each participant two small pillows, towels, pieces of paper, paper plates, etc. Using only those two objects as their safe places to step, they must make their way from the beginning point to the end point. Usually this would be done by stepping on one while placing the other in front of you, reaching back to grab the first one, then placing that one in front of you, and so on. However, kids can get creative and can problem solve to see if they can think of any other ways to accomplish their mission. This gets their brains thinking and their bodies moving!
  • Lego Task Cards
    On small pieces of paper, write the name of several objects (one per paper). Have your child choose one paper out of a bowl, then create that object. This promotes problem solving, critical thinking, and fine motor skill development. You can also turn it into a friendly competition if you have more than one child playing. 
  • Creative Crafting
    Set out construction paper, popsicle sticks, googly eyes, kid-safe scissors, pipe cleaners, glue, markers, and any other kid-friendly craft supplies you might have. Watch the magic unfold as they cut, glue, and create to their heart’s content. You’ll be amazed at what they come up with as their imaginations run wild.
  • Machine Factory
    Using extra boxes, empty paper towel or toilet paper tubes, string, scissors, and paper, glue or tape together a working machine. As the adult, you can choose what function their machine must carry out, or you can let them get creative and come up with their own idea. This is an excellent STEM activity, as it allows kids to think about logistics, function, machine parts, and how to carry out their plan. 
  • Puzzle Time
    Jigsaw puzzles are such a fun thing to do when you’re cozied up in your house (or anytime, really!). Not only are they fun for all ages, they also keep the mind active. Puzzles promote family togetherness and problem solving together. 

Those winter storms sure can be brutal, and can push your sanity to the edge, but there are so many fun things you can do with your kids when you have nowhere to go and no place to be. Being stuck inside doesn’t have to be boring– it can be fun for everyone AND can even be educational. Cold Climate Memory

Gamification has started making itself more known in today’s classrooms, and it has proven to be a fun, engaging way to teach new concepts or review old ones. As I’ve talked about before– any time you can merge learning and fun is a bonus! 

These colder winter months are the perfect time to teach your students about cold weather climates and the animals that call these places home. There is so much to learn about these habitats and climates! I’ve created a simple, yet fun Cold Climate Memory game for you to use in your classroom as you teach about colder climates.

Four Square Slap Jack

We’re down to the last few weeks of summer break where we live, and we’re feeling it! Since I don’t have the energy to take all five of my kids to the splash pad or pool every day, I’ve had to use my creative energy to come up with activities for them to do. That’s not to say that I provide them with entertainment every second of every day— they have plenty of time to use their own imaginations and come up with their own fun. Sometimes they just need a little encouragement from me! 

I recently saw a fun idea that someone had posted, and decided to put my own twist on it and share it with you. I’m calling it Four-Square Slap Jack, and the goal of the game is for players to be the first to put their hand down on a paper whose category was NOT called out. For example, players have four papers in front of them, each with a different shape printed on it (circles, hearts, stars, and triangles). The caller calls out a category, and players race to put their hands on any other paper than that which was called. So if “hearts” was called, they place their hands on circles, stars, or triangles. 

This activity is great for younger kids, as it helps with shape recognition as well as hand-eye coordination, both of which are great skills for kids to learn and practice. It’s also a great activity to promote careful listening. I know I’m not the only parent or teacher who loves a fun game that is also educational! I’ve attached the game and instructions below— feel free to print off a copy and have fun. 

Oh, and as an added bonus, this game is great for days when you’re completely exhausted and just can’t muster up the energy to run around and play with your kids— it’s easy to play while relaxing on the couch!

This game can also be used in the classroom as a group activity or even a whole class activity.

Fun Time Fillers

One of the goals in teaching is to effectively use as much of the time as you are given. I remember one professor in college telling us to teach “bell to bell” and not waste a single minute in between. While I get the sentiment, I do think it’s okay to have some days where you do have some extra time after a lesson or in between activities. Some days extra minutes just happen— lessons go quicker than anticipated, technology problems happen and thwart your plans, or maybe the one student who is always making things take longer with disruptions is absent, so things go smoother and quicker. Whatever the reason, extra time happens, and it’s a good idea to have some time filler ideas tucked away, ready to be executed at any given time. Not sure what to do to fill time? Don’t worry! I’ve got you!

List-Maker, List-Maker, Make Me a List

Divide students into groups of 3-4. Make sure they have one piece of paper and one pen or pencil per group. Have each group designate a scribe (this position can rotate with each round). Choose a topic that is something that is familiar to everyone. Once you’ve chosen the topic, set a timer for one minute, and have groups think of as many things as they can that go with the topic. For example, if you choose “cereals” as a topic, groups would have one minute to list as many cereals as they can think of. At the end of the minute, whichever team has the most items listed wins the round. Repeat as many times as you have time for. 

Hot Potato

Have students sit on their desks or stand/sit in a circle. Choose a soft ball, stuffed animal, or wadded up piece of paper. Play a song and have students toss the object from one person to the next as quickly as possible. Stop the music at a random time, and whoever has the object when the music stops is out for the rest of the round. Continue until there is only one student left standing. Be sure to set up safety and fairness rules to ensure that everyone is playing kindly, safely, and fairly. 

Magic Words

Divide students into small groups (2-3 per group works best), and give each group a piece of paper and something to write with. Give the class a word, preferably a longer one, and set a timer for however long you want— the shorter the time, though, the more of a challenge it becomes. Students have the allotted time to use the letters of the given word to find other words. For example, say you give the class the word “watermelon”. They would then use the letters in that word to make new words, like water, melon, wait, neat, lemon, rate, etc. They must be real words, and must be spelled correctly. Whichever team has the most words by the end of the time wins the round.

A Letter and Some Categories

Again, divide the class into small groups. One the board, list five or so categories— things like countries, animals, fruits, cities, car makes, etc. Set a timer for a time of your choice, make sure each group has paper and something to write with, then give the class a letter of the alphabet. In the time given, groups must think of something for each category that begins with the letter they were given. For example, if you gave them the letter B and the categories listed above, one group’s response could look like Bolivia, bear, banana, Baltimore, and BMW. Repeat with different letters. 

Rhyme Time

As before, divide the class into small groups. Make sure each group has a piece of paper and something to write with. Set a timer, and give the class a word that can easily be rhymed with. In the given time, groups must generate a list of as many words as they can think of that rhyme with the word they were given. 

These ideas are all super simple, require no prep time, and can be done with any size of class. While some might see these games as a waste of time, all of them— with maybe the exception of Hot Potato— require students to think quickly, work together, and think about a specific category or set of rules. So really, they aren’t a waste of time, but rather a fun, engaging way to fill a few minutes while strengthening thinking and social skills. And that, my friends, is a win in my book!
